Director, Business Development

Summary of Position

We are looking for a highly quantitative and analytical Director, Business Development with 4-6 years of sales experience. This position is for you if you love selling and get a buzz off helping people make great choices by enrolling in a program or buying a product that is going to improve their personal and professional lives.

The ideal candidate would either have managed multiple clients and a book of business or believes he or she can manage a large volume of clients. Our newest Director will report directly to the President of Heroic Public Speaking.


This role might be a good fit for you if you:

  • Have experience working in and selling for or to mid to large corporations. You have experience working long-term sales processes that include a number of key decision makers.
  • Earned a proven track record of running highly efficient customer acquisition and retention.
  • Possess a proven track record of gaining more market share from bringing on new clients.
  • Can sell. You can do this because you set goals for yourself and you are persistent. You are impeccable at following up and you take responsibility for your results.
  • Are highly analytical with the ability to process and understand large data sets and clearly articulate updates to other team members.
  • Maintain strong project management skills to ensure internal execution against plans.
  • Consider yourself entrepreneurial. Must be resourceful and thrive in a laid back but fast paced, constantly changing environment.
  • Communicate clearly. You write well. You speak persuasively. You can explain just about anything to anyone, and you’re equally comfortable communicating in person, on the phone, or through email.
  • Maintain a motivated and driven worth ethic. Maybe you colored outside the lines as a kid but that has morphed into you always looking for new challenges and volunteering for them without being asked.
  • Can get along well in a small team environment. We are family. Who sometimes take off on Fridays when the weather is warm – and we always have a summer staff party on the Founder’s boat.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engage in direct outreach to companies that would benefit from our corporate trainings, generate proposals and follow through to new client contracts.
  • Schedule phone calls or Skype meetings with potential clients that lead to successful sales.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Communications and the Director of Marketing to successfully develop strategy, and achieve sales objectives.
  • Develop and improve sales protocols, processes, and email templates to lay the foundation for a growing sales team (this position offers possible opportunity for development into a sales team management role over time).
  • Maintain high level of organization and structure, and implement an efficient tasking system that allows you to follow up with leads in a timely, efficient manner.
  • Keep concise notes in Infusionsoft (our CRM) about each customer interaction, including follow up and long-term lead development.
  • Work closely with the key team members to implement new lead generation opportunities, as well as alternative methods of communication.
  • Respond via email, social media, and phone to requests for information about our products and services.
  • Manage sales process at live events.
  • Give sales presentations to groups of potential clients.

Education and Qualifications

We don’t really care where you went to school or what level of education you’ve achieved. We care about who you are now and how you show up in the world now. We have a highly intelligent and sophisticated group of people working together with shared values. We have more staff members with Masters degrees than the typical non-academic organization, however almost none of these degrees are actually related to the work they now do. The point is: how someone did in school or where they went to school or what they studied isn’t the first thing we consider when making our hiring decisions.

We do however expect that you have:

  • 4-6 years of sales experience or similar experience.
  • A proven track record of uncovering new opportunities and converting them into clients.
  • Experience with (and comfort and ease) using technology and the internet to improve work efficiency. Prior experience working with Infusionsoft a plus but not required as long as you’re willing and able to learn new technology and use it.
  • Knowledge of process, project, and program management theory and practices - and the ability to apply them when solving operational issues.
  • Ability to quickly learn new tools and technologies.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse range of people and job functions.
  • Experience creating systems and structures where none currently exist.
  • A high degree of organization, and to be meticulously detail oriented, proactive, efficient, and service focused.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain discretion (signing a confidentiality agreement is required).
  • Professional presentation of self and great personality (kindness and a sense of humor required).
  • Ability to take direction and manage up.
  • Resourcefulness (you’re not a wait to be told what to do kind of person).
  • Strong professional presence with excellent interpersonal skills.

  • This is a base + commission position including full benefits.
  • The company offers enrollment in a Platinum health insurance plan through United Health Care and pays 50% of the premiums if you choose to enroll.
  • Very generous retirement plan in the form of a Defined Benefit Plan. The Company contributes pre-tax dollars equal to at least 9% of your total compensation each year.
  • 401K

This role is a full-time position. Compensation is commensurate with experience.

This position rarely requires much travel.

Type of Employment and Benefits

This role is a full-time position. Compensation is commensurate with experience and can be structured in a variety of ways. Note, however, there is no cap on what you can earn regardless of how the overall package is structured. If you like contributing to your success with no limit to the upside, then this position is for you. If you want your paycheck to have the same exact number every month even if it means there is no opportunity for growth, then this position is not for you.

The company offers enrollment in a Platinum health insurance plan through United Health Care and pays 50% of the premiums if you choose to enroll.

Additionally, the company offers a very generous retirement plan in the form of a Defined Benefit Plan and contributes pre-tax dollars equal to at least 9% of your total compensation each year. There is also a 401K plan to which you can choose to contribute if you’d like. Your contributions to the 401K can be in the form of a post-tax ROTH 401K or pre-tax Traditional 401K.
